How To Make Money Online – Finding a Niche on Clickbank

In our previous posts (here and here) we discussed the overall structure to making money online in the form of affiliate marketing and finding a particular niche. In this post, we are going to talk about how to find a niche in Clickbank.

What is Clickbank
As I mentioned in a previous post, Clickbank is the place where vendors can promote ebooks, guides, courses, and software in a variety of areas. Many dieting and weighloss products that you see promoted through Google or Bing are products on Clickbank.

Clickbank is very popular with affiliates because 1. it is very easy to sign up and start promoting products and 2. the commissions are as high as 75%. Now this may sound great and you may be ready to run out and start promoting products from Clickbank but before you begin, you need to know how to find a good product.

There are over 100,000 products to promote on Clickbank in all types of niches ranging from personal finance to parenting. This can be extremely overwhelming if you do not know how and where to begin.

Once you sign up with Clickbank, the first thing you will do is go visit the Marketplace. This is where all the products are stored. You should see this image in the center of the page when you get there.

The second thing you might notice on this page is the list of Categories on the sidebar. Here you will see the large variety of topics that exist in Clickbank. As you click on each category, it will drop down revealing the product niches.


Once you click on a niche it will load up all the products available for you to promote in the center of the page.


This is where things can get very confusing. How do you decide which product to promote? As you will notice, Clickbank will list its products by Popularity. But this is can be very misleading. One popular way of choosing a product to promote is by sorting by Gravity. According to Clickbank, Gravity means:

the number of different affiliates who earned a commission by promoting this product over the past 12 weeks. Since more recent transactions are given a higher value, this number can give you an idea of what products are “hot” at the moment, in terms of being promoted by many affiliates and making a good number of sales. However, high gravity can also indicate that there will be a lot of competition in promoting this product.

There is a big dispute among seasoned affiliates whether or not you should focus on the Gravity of a product to decide whether or not to promote it. As the definition above indicates, there are problems with relying on it. If there is too much competition then you will need to spend a lot of money competing with other affiliates if you decide to promote the product through PPC (Pay Per Click). Also, there will be plenty of competition even if you go the SEO route. It will be difficult to get in high on the SERPS (Search Engine Result Pages) if so many other people are doing the same thing. Another factor is that the number really only reflects the top affiliates who are really successful promoting the product. Many successful affiliates will tell you to focus on a low Gravity number somewhere around 30 – 60 as this will indicate lower competition or avoid Gravity altogether and just focus on the value of the product itself.

How to Find Valued Products
Once you have decided on a niche to market finding a good product could take some work. As I mentioned above, you could focus primarily on Gravity but its not always advised. I have yet to make good money by promoting a product with high Gravity.

The best way to choose a product is one that solves a particular problem whether it be health or financial and has a good sales page. Here are the items to look for:

  • Solves a particular problem: ex. weightloss, debts
  • Gravity below 60. The lower the better as long as it meets the other criteria on this list
  • Good sales page: eg sales letter, video
  • No exit funnels on sales page: eg Contact us, free trial
  • No email Opt-in by vendor: an opt-in is where the customer will give the vendor his/her email address i.e. opt-in for a copy of a free ebook or download instead of buying the product. Opt-in is a very important component of affiliate marketing and will be discussed in length in a future post.
  • Sizeable commissions. As I mentioned above, many products have a 75% commission. But it really depends on the EPS (Earnings per sale). If the EPS is fairly high with a lower commission percentage than it still may be a good product to promote. As with Opt-in above, EPS and commissions is an important component of affiliate marketing and will be discussed in a future post.

Once you found a product that meets the criteria above you can start planning ways to promote it and start making money. We will talk about the various ways to promote a product in a future post.
