This is Part I of a series of posts on making money online. In my previous post on this topic I gave an introduction to making money online with an overview of all the necessary steps. If you havent read that post, I would suggest you read it now. My goal for this post is to cover the first essential step which is finding a niche.
As I mentioned before, there are many ways to make money online. While some ways are easier than others, it still requires a lot of time and patience to learn the ropes and get your sites up and ready. Even though there are people making money online by only spending fours hours a week, they didnt start this way. No matter what program you get or format you choose for making money online you will need to put in some initial time and effort. But for the purpose of this post, I am going to talk about finding a niche.
What is a niche
The first thing to ask before starting is “What is a niche?”. According to Wikipedia a niche is:
A niche market is the subset of the market on which a specific product is focused. The market niche defines the product features aimed at satisfying specific market needs.
Understanding this quote is key to understanding the basics of making money online and is crucial to your success as an affiliate marketer. Many affiliates fail at making money online simply because they dont focus on a particular niche. A good example of a specific niche is any sub category on Amazon.com. Here are some example of niches on Amazon that focus on specific products:
These of course are just examples. If you want to make money online promoting products, Amazon.com might not be the way to go.
Most affiliates make money online by promoting products that cater to solving a persons particular issue. Two of the most popular niches for affiliate marketers is the “Make Money” online niche and the “Weightloss / Dieting” niche. But don’t get stuck on just these two niches. There are hundreds of other niches and sometimes focusing on a niche that isn’t the most popular may be the most profitable for you simply because the competition is lighter.
As I mentioned above, the most popular niches have to do with helping people solve a particular problem. These types of niches are sometimes referred to as Evergreen Niches mainly because they are always profitable. Therefore, the most common niches are as follows:
1. Make money online – Investing and Trading, Affiliate Marketing
2. Health and Fitness – Dieting, Acne, Pregnancy, Body Building, Six Pack Abs
3. Relationships – Dating, Parenting, Marriage / Divorce
4. Personal Development / Self Help – Stress Management, Self Esteem
5. Sports – Jump higher, Improve your golf swing
6. Pets – Dog Training, Dog Food
As you can see in the list above, each topic can be broken down to a particular niche. You should know that while there are variations of this list with some items replaced by others, the first three are the most popular. Another point, many people are making good money promoting niches that other people would never have thought of promoting. So a lesson that can be learned from this is that you can make almost any niche into a profitable niche if you know how to work it.
